What does MOT stand for?

An MOT, or “Ministry of Transport”, test is an annual safety and emissions check required by law for most vehicles over 3 years old in the UK. It’s designed to ensure that your car meets the minimum safety and environmental standards set out by the government, helping to keep you and other road users safe. 

So, what is an MOT check? During an MOT, a qualified tester will check key parts of your vehicle, like brakes, lights, and tyres, to ensure everything is in good working order. If your car passes, you'll receive an MOT certificate. If it doesn’t, the tester will explain any issues and what needs to be fixed to get your vehicle road-safe again.

What is checked on an MOT?

MOT tests are designed to ensure your car is safe, roadworthy, and environmentally friendly. Common failure points often include worn-out brake pads, tyres that don’t meet the minimum tread depth, or faulty lights. To avoid these pitfalls, it’s a good idea to check these items beforehand and make any necessary fixes. 

Here’s a quick overview of what’s checked during an MOT:

• Brakes - Tested for effectiveness and balance, including handbrakes, brake pads, and ABS warning lights. 

• Lights– All lights must work and align properly, including daytime running lights and fog lights (checked since May 2018). 

• Fuel System – Inspected for leaks and secure fittings. 

• Mirrors and Windows – Must be secure, undamaged, and free from large cracks or chips. 

• Electrical Equipment – Horns must work and be loud enough, but novelty horns are not allowed. 

• Exhaust and Emissions – Checked for secure fittings, legal emission limits, and visible smoke from diesel cars with a DPF. 

• Bodywork – No sharp edges or excessive rust near vital components like brakes or steering. 

• Doors and Openings – Must open and close properly, including the bonnet and tailgate. 

• Seats and Seatbelts – Seats must be secure, and seatbelts should lock and retract properly. 

• Steering – Inspected for wear, alignment, and proper operation of power steering. 

• Tow Bar – If fitted, it must be secure and free from damage or corrosion. 

• Wheels and Tyres – Tyres must have at least 1.6mm tread depth, with no cuts or bulges, and wheels must be secure. 

• Vehicle Identification – The VIN must be clearly displayed and match your documents. 

It’s worth noting that MOTs don’t include checks on the engine, clutch, or gearbox.

Preparing for an MOT doesn’t have to be stressful if you take a few simple steps beforehand.

1. Start by doing some pre-test checks at home, such as ensuring your lights, wipers, and horn are working properly, and that your tyres have enough tread depth.  
2. It’s also a good idea to book your test early to give you more time to address any issues if your vehicle doesn’t pass its MOT. 
3. Fixing small problems, like replacing worn brake pads or topping up fluids, before the test can help you avoid unnecessary failures.

How to prepare for an MOT test

What happens if your car fails its MOT?

If your car doesn’t pass its MOT, the next steps will depend on whether the faults are minor or major. Minor faults don’t stop you from driving, but it’s smart to get them sorted as soon as possible to keep your car running safely. Major faults, however, mean your car isn’t roadworthy and can’t be driven until the issues are fixed and a passing MOT certificate is issued. 

You might be able to save some money on the retest, too! If you have the repairs done at the same garage within 10 working days, you could be eligible for a free partial retest. If not, a full retest fee might apply. To avoid unnecessary stress, it’s always a good idea to use a trusted mechanic to carry out any repairs. 

What does an MOT advisory note mean?

Sometimes your car might pass its MOT with what’s known as “minor faults.” These are small issues that aren’t serious enough to fail the test but will need attention to keep your car running smoothly.
