What is a Free Battery Check?
A free battery health check at HiQ Tyres & Autocare is an excellent way to identify any underlying battery issues before they become serious problems. This proactive test ensures your battery is in good working order, giving you peace of mind. Our test is more thorough than just checking the voltage. Even if the charge seems fine, it's important to understand how the voltage behaves under different conditions, such as when starting the engine. When the readings fall outside the optimal range, our skilled technicians will know when it’s time to recommend a replacement.
During a battery inspection, the technician will also check for signs of damage, such as leaks, spills, cracks, corrosion, dirt, frayed cables, oxidized cables, or loose bolts and brackets. In unsealed lead-acid batteries, the technician will check the electrolyte levels and use a hydrometer to test the acidity.
If you have any concerns about your car battery's condition, we strongly recommend having both the battery and charging system checked as soon as possible.
Why do you get issues with your battery and how do you identify battery issues?
Car batteries can go flat for several reasons. As a battery nears the end of its useful life, it struggles to retain a charge because the electrochemical process that powers it becomes less efficient. Batteries can also lose charge due to parasitic loads, such as a malfunctioning alarm system that continues to draw power when the vehicle is parked and not in use. Similarly, a low-mileage driving pattern can have the same effect, as the battery doesn’t receive enough charge from the alternator/charging system to maintain a healthy state of charge.
Difficulty starting your vehicle can be a sign of poor battery health or electrical issues that are causing the battery to discharge prematurely. If the vehicle isn’t charging properly, it can lead to frequent battery failures.
The importance of a regular battery check
Undiagnosed battery issues can lead to unnecessary expenses from replacing other components. Proper testing helps eliminate other potential causes, such as slipping fan belts, electrical shorts, or drains from open circuits, ensuring a more accurate diagnosis.
